Today's blog post is an interesting variation of Chana Masala. Sharing Chatpata Chana Masala Recipe with step by step photographs.




Chatpata Chana Masala is a very delicious, lip smacking legume based vegetarian dish served as a side dish. Today's blog post is an interesting amalgamation of Kabuli Chana aka Chickpeas and Green Tomatoes. It is prepared with boiled chickpeas, green tomatoes, onions, g3 and flavored with Indian spices.



Green tomatoes are seasonal in nature and available only in winter season in this part of the world. The addition of green tomatoes in this recipe worked awesomely and it turned out very delicious, flavourful and chatpata chana masala .

☑Recipe details 

◽Cuisine - Indian

◽Preparation time 15-20 minutes 
◽Cooking time 15-20 minutes
◽Servings 3-4



Ingredients required 
◽1 cup soaked overnight chickpeas - kabuli chana
◽3 onions 
◽2-3 green tomatoes 
◽2-3 green chillies
◽2-3 garlic cloves
◽1 inch ginger
◽1 tsp garam masala powder 
◽2-3 tsp red chilli powder
◽2 tsp coriander powder
◽½ tsp dry mango powder
◽Salt to taste 
◽2 tbsp cooking oil


☑Method 
✔Step 1 Mise en place

Chickpeas - washed - soaked overnight - rinse again - add 1tsp salt, 1tsp cooking oil, chickpeas and water. Pressure cook for 5-6 whistles or until nicely cooked..




Onions - peeled and finely chopped 




Tomatoes and G3 - make a coarse paste. G3 means ginger, garlic and green chillies




✔Step 2 Cooking time

◾Heat oil in a deep frying pan. Add onions, stir fry until golden brownish


◾Add tomatoes and g3 paste. Cook it on slow flame for approximately 5-6 minutes until the oil starts to separate.


◾Now add all the dry ingredients i.e. turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chilly powder, dry mango powder and salt taste. Mix it all well. Cook it for a min or two.



◾Add boiled chickpeas and half cup water, mix it all well. Cover it with lid, simmer and cook until water has almost evaporated.



◾Lastly add garam masala powder. Mix it well.


◾Garnish with coriander leaves. Serve hot with Chapati or with your favorite Indian bread or rice.
