Sweet and Spicy Tomato Chutney with Nigella Seeds

How to make Sweet Tomato Chutney, Easy Recipe of Home made Sweet and Spicy Tomato Chutney, Indian Sweet Tomato Chutney

Hello Friends,

Today I am going to share yet another chutney recipe which is sweet, spicy and tangy in taste and made from red juicy and good quality tomatoes. This recipe was a specialty of my grandma.

As per mom, in those days, this was one of the most relished chutney in their place and in every season many batches were prepared. My granny use to prepare this chutney with just five ingredients i.e. tomatoes, jaggery, red chili powder, Onion s
eeds and a pinch of salt.

Sweet and Spicy Tomato chutney is a very delightful and versatile condiment which is made from fresh red juicy tomatoes, which are cooked with sugar or jaggery, flavored with Nigella seeds and spiced with Indian spices which give this chutney a very distinctive and scrumptious taste. This chutney goes well with all types of Indian breads, but best suited for stuffed parathas, Aloo stuffed spicy grilled sandwiches and as a spread on bread or wraps.

☑ Let's start with the recipe details

♨Recipe details ⬇

Preparation time 5-10 min
Cook time 15-20 min
Recipe type Accompaniment
Cuisine Indian

♨Ingredients required ⬇

1kg Red Juicy Tomatoes - chopped
250-300g Sugar/ Jaggery
2tbsp red chilly powder
2tsp sea salt / mota namak
8-10 whole black pepper
4-5 cloves
½tsp cinnamon powder
1tsp fennel seeds
3tsp Nigella seeds / Onion seeds (Kalonji)
1tbsp lemon juice or
1tsp vinegar

☑ Method ⬇

◾Wash each tomato thoroughly under running water and then cut into small pieces.

◾In a large, heavy bottomed saucepan, add chopped tomatoes, sugar and all the spices mentioned above, bring to gentle simmer, stirring frequently.

◾You have to cook these tomatoes for 20-25 minutes until the sugar is fully dissolved and tomatoes become soft and pulpy. Continue stirring in between to avoid sticking.

◾Additional water is not needed if using red juicy tomatoes, if moisture is missing in this chutney add half cup water. Cook this mixture, until tomatoes are cooked nicely and the mixture thickens. Please see to it that this chutney has to be in semi liquid consistency.

◾ Take out from heat, allow it to cool down. Lastly add vinegar. Transfer this into sterilized jars and seal. Store this in the refrigerator, will keep for 5-6 weeks.
