Tomato Chutney - Sweet & Spicy Tomato Chutney Recipe with Nigella Seeds

How to make sweet & spicy tomato chutney | tomato pickle | Khatti Meethi Tamatar Ki Chutney with step by step photos..

Hi,

A very big thank you to all my readers and followers. I can't believe my recipes are so much loved and religiously followed.. I was not active in my food blog for a very long time, even though, I can see a regular increase in the number of visitors and followers.

Last year dad's health got badly affected due to lung infection and Mom's health also affected badly with severe back pain due to stress, which resulted in complete bed rest and many physiotherapy sessions. I was not in a position to focus on food blogging and then lost complete touch.. It usually happens to me as, when I take small breaks in food blogging or writing work, it keeps on getting bigger and bigger.

I really loved this sweet gesture when a few friends from Instagram inquired about me as whether everything is going good in my life! And why I'm not active..
Thank you..😘😘😘

After that when dad's health improved, we did some long pending renovation work, so the house was in total mess for many months and was difficult for me to focus on food photography or blogging. And now in lockdown we don't get all the things easily, so again difficult to add recipes as we are actually struggling for the basic necessities of life.. I'm going to add all those recipes which were religiously tried and tested in this so long break period as I never give up on experimenting new recipes and keep trying many recipes... I've also clicked step of step recipe photos with an intent to post.. The count of such recipes is not so big, still, I'm sure, this helps me to come out of this break zone..

A blessing in disguise is the best suited words for this sweet & spicy tomato recipe, though I made the first batch in the month of January, but this turns out life saver in this lockdown period. Simple, easy to make with minimum ingredients and truly delicious.. Sharing recipe with step by step photos..

This recipe is dedicated to my grandma. This can be made with Jaggery or sugar or perfect balance of both. I mainly prefer in sugar, but you can try as per your taste.

I have attempted this recipe with cherry tomatoes, but you can try with regular tomatoes as well. Only difference cheery tomatoes take less cooking time compared to our regular tomatoes.

Some questions and answers related to this recipe..

Please suggest - best suited tomatoes for this recipe?

The best suited tomatoes are those which are sour in taste. They are large and almost round in shape, oval share are less sour, so they may not give desired taste..

Best place to store this chutney..
it's better to keep this in the refrigerator. Though no harm in keeping outside, but humidity is a big concern for me as affect badly if not consumed within 2 week's time..

Best accompanied food for this chutney..
Well, this goes with our regular Indian food. It goes well with spicy Thepla or even with plain paratha. We love this chutney with grilled alu masala sandwich, handvo, rava dhokla and even with bread rolls..

Let's get started

Recipe type accompaniment
Cuisine Indian
Preparation time 10 minutes
Cooking time 20-25 minutes

Ingredients needed

½ kg tomatoes
1 cup sugar / Jaggery or as needed
1-2 tsp onion seeds - Nigella Seeds - Kalonji
2-3 tsp red chilly powder
5-6 cloves
2-3 bay leaves - tez pata
1 small stick cinnamon
1 black cardamom
1-2 tsp salt
1-2 tbsp vinegar

Method

Step 1 Mise en place

Tomatoes - wash - cut into  halves  or roughly chopped..

Step 2 cooking time

Add tomatoes and ½ cup water in pressure cooker and allow 1-2 whistles depending on quality of tomatoes. If you've bought good quality tomatoes, which gets easily cooked, then you can skip this pressure cooking process..

Now add all the ingredients i.e. sugar, Nigella seeds, cloves, cinnamon stick, black cardamom & 1 tsp salt..

Cook it on slow flame for 10-12 minutes.. If needed, add ½ cup water.. Stir occasionally to avoid sticking to the bottom.. Cook until tomatoes are nicely cooked and glossy thick texture is obtained.. Please note it must have semi liquid consistency and not fully dried..

Allow it to cool down. Lastly add vinegar and mix it well..

Store this in a glass jar and keep it in the refrigerator. Our delicious chutney is ready.
