Lobia beans aka fresh green cow pea is a healthy and nutritious vegetable. It contains all the essential minerals and vitamins which are very much needed for the normal functioning of our body. It is a perfect food for weight loss as high in fiber and low in calories and fat. It plays a very significant role in the prevention of various diseases as a good source of antioxidants.


Today's recipe is a tiffin box recipe. I used to love this food preparation a lot in my school days. It is very satisfying and delicious chawli beans recipe for me. Normally Cowpeas are cooked in curry and served with steamed rice, but as you can see, this recipe has dry consistency so best suited with our Indian breads.

Recipe details 

  • Preparation time 12-15 minutes 
  • Cooking time 25-30 minutes

Ingredients required

  • 500 grams green chawli beans - boiled - allow 1-2 whistles depending on the quality of the beans
  • 2 medium size onions, finely chopped
  • 3 medium size tomatoes
  • 1-2 green chillies or as preferred 
  • 3 garlic cloves 
  • 1 small piece ginger 
  • 2-3 tsp red chilly powder 
  • 1-2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp coriander powder 
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder
  • Salt to your taste 
  • 1 -2 tbsp cooking oil


Method

Step 1 Mise en place

◾Green chawli beans - boil - allow just 1-2 whistles depending on the quality of the beans.



◾Onion - peel - finely chopped 

◾Tomato & G3 paste


◾Combine tomatoes, ginger, garlic and green chillies in a mixer grinder or blender jar and grind it to a coarse paste.




Step 2 cooking time  

◾Heat some oil in a frying pan. Add the finely chopped onions. Saute them till it turns golden brown.





◾Add tomatoes and g3 paste. Stir fry and cook until softened and oil leaves the sides of the pan.




◾Add all the dry ingredients i.e. coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chilly powder and salt to taste. Mix it all well. 




◾Add ½ cup water or according to the consistency required.



◾Add to this boiled green chawli beans.



◾Lastly add garam masala powder.



◾Cover the pan with lid and cook till done.






◾Serve hot with your preferred Indian bread.
